why is my 1977 dodge 440 sportsman motorhome losing power and hesitating?

I just recently replaced the fuel pump in my ‘77 dodge sportsman 440 motorhome and it ran fine for a couple of days but now i am experiencing loss of power, backfiring, hesitation when trying to accellerate. there are 2 fuel pumps in line back to back…. could this be the problem? perhaps the fuel pumps working too hard and maybe restricting the fuel flow somehow? i have already made sure there is plenty of gas in the tank . help or advice?

I’m wondering why your MH has two fuel pumps. You can run 2500hp MOPAR race engines on one fuel pump. My MOPAR small block engine burns more than a gallon a minute while dyno testing and I have one fuel pump.

Is the motor home carb’d or fuel injected? In a certain situtaion with fuel injection, you could be pulsating the fuel pressure causing the problems that you seem to have.

If its carb’d and you over pressure the carb, its very possible that you crushed the float bowls. This too will cause the symptoms that you are experiencing..

Either remove or bypass one of the pumps and see how it works. Have you run a fuel pressure gauge to see what type of pressure you are running and if its steady pressure.

what are their two fuel pumps on that one,it doesn’t need two on it,i got one of those motor homes and it only has the factory stock one on it and it runs fine, you got one pump pushing against the other and this isn’t good, you need one pump on it that’s all any of them need, i also have the 440 in mine, with a huge four barrel carb and it only needs one pump, and it supplies plenty of gas to the engine, enough that i had to use regulator to control the amount of gas it was getting, good luck with it.
