    Depends on your subject.

People have made a living photographing things in their own backyard.

I think digital has made photography ultra-competitive. You need a hook and sometimes that may mean that you will need to travel. Ultimately, it will depend on your imagery. Traveling or not.

There are so many areas of photography; architectural, corporate, editorial, commercial, food, wedding, sports, fashion, nature, wild life, documentary, war, etc. Each brings with it its own challenges. Photography in general is a hart business. Talent and business skills are a must.
You don’t have to travel if you don’t want to.

Yes it can be hard. If you study full time for 3 years like I did then its not as hard as someone with no skills trying to compete with skilled people. If you set up a studio you won’t travel much, I shoot sports and travel a little bit. As travel and seeing the world will enhance your vision of the world why would you not want to travel? Travel is the greatest experience of my lifetime. Goto Europe or Africa and open your eyes and mind, this will assist your image making.

It’s not easy, otherwise everyone would be doing it.

And unless you plan on having a studio and always making your clientts come to you, then yes, there is travel involved.

I’d say at this point, photography would not be a good career for you.
