I think that's fine. As long as you are doing well in the class I don't see why he or she would say anything bad about you. I actually studied in London England last summer and I was kind of in your shoes. However I had spoken to the professor once or twice outside of class at office hours. But I didn't really participate in class either. Anyway I sent him an email asking him to be a reference (I only needed a refrence and not a letter of recommendation) Just ask...I'm sure he or she will be willing to help you out. Just ask them to talk about how well you are doing in the class and how this opportunity will be beneficial for you to break out of your shell. Good luck and have a fantastic time where ever you are going! You're going to have so much fun!!!
